There are multiple locations where judicial matters are heard in Jefferson Parish. The 24th Judicial District Courthouse is the primary location. The Old Parish Courthouse was completed in 1907 and was used until 1956. It is now the City Hall for Gretna.
The 24th Judicial District Court is located in the Thomas F. Donelon Building. The original Annex Building opened in 1969. Three stories were added in the late 1970s. The building was renovated in the early 2000s and was completed in 2007.

Clerk of Court
The Clerk of Court is an elected position in Louisiana, and the position comes with many duties. The Clerk has an important part in all things court-related. The clerk handles jury management, maintenance of all court records, and payments for court-ordered fees and fines. The Clerk attends all court hearings and trials.
The primary role of the Clerk of Court is to preserve the official records for the parish. This includes court proceedings and records, land records, marriage licenses, and other documents. The Clerk is the Chief Election Officer, in charge of the elections within the parish.

United States District Court
Jefferson Parish is part of the Eastern District of Louisiana for the United States District Court. This district includes Assumption, Jefferson, Orleans, St. Bernard, St. James, St. Charles, Lafourche, St. John the Baptist, Tangipahoa, St. Tammany, Washington, and Terrebonne parishes.
Nannette Jolivette Brown is the Chief Judge, and Carol L. Michel is the Clerk of Court.
District Court
The District Courts are the trial courts of general jurisdiction in Louisiana. There are 40 judicial districts in Louisiana, with the 24th Judicial District Court including Jefferson Parish. District courts have jurisdiction over criminal cases, juvenile court cases, and civil court cases involving more than $20,000.
Parish Court
Parish Courts have limited jurisdiction, but they have concurrent jurisdiction with District Court over criminal offenses that have a maximum penalty of a fine of $1,000 or less and/or 6 months in jail. For civil cases, jurisdiction is concurrent with District Court over cases that involve up to $20,000.
There are two Parish Courts located in Jefferson Parish.
Justices of the Peace
Justices of the Peace have even narrower jurisdiction over criminal cases. They can issue peace bonds and commit magistrates to cases. They share civil jurisdiction with the District Court in cases involving up to $5,000.
Justices of the Peace can also handle evictions.
Drug Court
Adult Drug Court provides an opportunity for non-violent offenders. The program lasts approximately 12-18 months. The program involves treatment for substance abuse, regular court appearances, drug testing, and counseling.
Criminal Court
Most criminal cases are handled by the 24th Judicial District Court. Misdemeanors and ordinance violations may be handled in Parish Court or by a Justice of the Peace.
Probate Court
There is no official Probate Court in Jefferson Parish. Any related court cases are handled in District Court.
Family Court
The Family Division hears cases regarding domestic relations. This includes things like name changes, divorce, custody, paternity, adoption and child/spousal support.
Juvenile Court
This court hears cases involving delinquency, dependency, and emancipation. Delinquency refers to criminal offenses. Dependency refers to truancy or cases where a child has been neglected or abused.
